What makes a great school or kindergarten photo?

To answer this question we draw on over 30 years of experience photographing schools and kindergartens. We base our opinion on the greatly appreciated feedback we’ve received from parents, grandparents, and teachers alike. And we summarise our answer with this one simple word…Natural.

A great school or kindergarten photo captures:

- Natural smiles and photos that radiate with personality:

Our photographers know how to get that smile – the one that really illuminates the face and extends to the eyes, truly conveying a child’s personality.

- Natural lighting and Natural skin tones:

We prefer and endeavour to take photographs outside whenever possible. We find the children relax more in a less formal outdoor setting.

- Natural poses and an overall relaxed expression:

Our photographers have a friendly and informal manner with children and are experts at putting them at ease and arranging that perfect natural-looking shot.

- Natural surroundings and backgrounds:

Already great photos gain their ‘wow’ factor through utilising the natural outdoor environment: playgrounds, gates, trees, sun dappled leaves and bright blue skies. Soft vibrant background colours will accentuate natural skin tone and bring out eye colour.

At McRobie Studios we avoid photos that look contrived: forced smiles, flat light, formal poses and fake backgrounds. Such things serve only to tame and subdue the uniqueness and true colour that lies within every child.
